Most commonly, the bride’s family takes responsibility for the wedding costs, while the groom’s family pays for the rehearsal dinner. Unfortunately, this tradition fails to account for varying financial situations amidst different families. The families of both the bride and groom often plan to share the expense of the wedding, and likewise for the rehearsal dinner and other pre-wedding celebrations. Today, couples marry later in life, so it has also become quite common for the bride and groom to shoulder a large percentage of the wedding costs themselves. At the same time, both families must communicate honestly and openly about their budget in order to determine what each can afford. Talk openly with your family and with your fiance's family to ensure that all are in agreement.

While there is no obligation to invite the officiant to the rehearsal dinner or wedding reception, many couples choose to do so, especially if they maintain a close relationship with him or her. When including officiants, be sure to send formal invitations and invite his or her spouse as well. According to tradition, they sit in a position of honor at the parents’ table at both occasions.
